The job of a graphic novelist is not hard to find, in fact, the job jump right up to anyones lap that has talent in telling stories. (Mike, a graphic novelist) The art does not have to be perfect. The story just has to interest the reader. The only real requirement in this field is that the artist has passion and persistence. The tools and programs for this job can go from a pencil to computer generated art studios. Programs such as Photoshop, SAI and PageMaker are a few of many that can be used in this career. Photoshop is a difficult, but also easy, program to use, if time and effort is put into working with it before graduation and eventually moving into this job, will open many doors to the world of graphic novelist. (Mike, a graphic novelist)
Graphic Novels are books that have both words and pictures to tell a story. It is not like a picture book, manga or comic book in many ways. (The Idiots Guide to Creating Graphic Novels) Each graphic novel has something called panels. Panels are a section of drawings and words that go on either one section of or the whole page. The pages are filled with panels, drawings and words to create a scene for the reader. The words in the Graphic Novel are called Dialog. Each format of a characters dialog is in something called a bubble. Bubbles hold the dialog and present it in a way so you know what character is speaking. Graphic Novels has become a growing category in the world today.
A character is the person or thing in the story that someone reading the story can relate to. Everyone has a character they can relate to. From Robin Hood and his heroic days, to the Evil Green Goblin in Spiderman, There are many upon many Heroes and Villains, some villains even being the heroes. Its all how people perceive the situation.
Graphic Novels are just simply books with pictures and panels with writing. The only difference between a manga and a regular book are that books provide more written language than drawings and pictures. Graphic literature shows the expression of the character, instead of writing down the expressions. As you see by this example, the characters expressions are more abstract. This is a common use of the modern day Graphic Novelist. There is realism and other styles of which can be drawn. The style all depends on the artist. Just like a finger print, it's one out of a billion chance that someone's art would be the same as another. In the figure above, the artist shows common character expressions; scared, sad, happy, shocked, joyful, contented, angry and confused.
This drawing shows how panels and word bubbles can be formed into one page. Now this is only an example and there are many other ways from arranging them to fit into a page. This of course is not a Graphic Novel because the characters in it take on a manga style. Manga are comic like books from Japan or someone that draws in an abstract style. Manga are known as fictional books because of the main use of fantasy characters. Now Manga are not all from Japan, there are people in other countries that write their own manga books. There are many out there, possibly, there are as many manga as there are Comic books and Graphic Novels. Comic books on the other hand are books with short stories of anything the creator comes up with. The main theme of a comic book is superheroes.
There are many genres of Graphic Novels. A genre is the type of story one likes to read, such as horror or fiction. Now not everyone can like the same type of thing. Of course genres have a lot of terms: Action, Adventure, Crime, Mystery, Non-Fiction, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, superheroes, and et cetera. Some people like stories of heroes and white knights who save people from a villain. Others like a horrific mass murder that enjoys the onslaught of thousands of helpless victims. Without a genre type, there would be no story at all. The most used genres Are Fiction, Non-fiction, Sci-Fi, Horror, Mystery and Romance. Of course Graphic Novels only using four of the six listed; Non-Fiction, Horror, Mystery and Romance. Remember that Graphic Novels tell a factual story. A story that could happen to anyone, not Unicorns ran down to the magical stream to drink from its neuter filled waters. A better example would be, Bob walked down the long open road; he was bored and tired from a long days work. Its very simple to understand. Like all books, each one has to have a beginning, middle, and an end. Now of course the end doesnt always have to end in one book. Series are books that have a continued story from one book to another. The term for series in a graphic novel is volume. Yes it sounds like the term used for sound, but this volume means that its a story told within numerous books. Each volume holds one part of the whole story, and the story will end when the creator feels the need for it to end.
Graphic Novels differ from others such as Manga and Comic books in many ways. Starting with comic books, comic books are a collection of short stories in one. Each is either from one series of comic strips such as Garfield, or like the superhero, Batman. The usual Comic Book page has up to 10 comic strips. Each strip goes into a short story, either in one strip, or most of the book. Comic Books date back to the 80s. When they first came out, fans young and old were excited to read them.
